Default MP3 Cataloging

I'm currently evaluating various catalog software for my collection. AVCatalog certainly looks like a leader at the moment.

However, I would like to see a facility to scan MP3 music files (whether on disk or cd) and pick up the ID3 tag info for the catalog.

Will this be a future feature?

Alan

Alan,

Thank you for your suggestion. We do not plan on this for v2, however, this functionality may exist in v3, when that time comes.

I recently downloaded evaluation version of version 3.3.0..
As Ian's post below mentioned the ability to scan MP3 music files on disk or CD and pick up the ID3 tags would be great.
Your reply at that time was that it was not planned for Version 2 but possibly in Version 3....

Well???

You are now in version 3. Are you actively pursuing this possibility for MP3. If so when can we expect some progress on it?

Having to put them in manually is a HUGE task. I've got over 3,000 mp3's and I know others have upward over 10,000 or more in their collection.

I've looked around for months now for a catalog program that would meet my needs i.e. catalog of LP's, 45's 78's cassettes, MP3's, CD's. Your's is the best I've found so far but is sadly lacking in the area of MP3's which are very popular nowadays.

Anyway since Ian's post was way back in the year 2002 I was wondering what progress you had made if any.

Thanks

It is on the list to investigate and implement in the next major version, when that time comes.

AVCataloger version 3.6

and still NO MP3 support, just look at the date of the first post about this topic and the date it is currently...... how long is one to wait....

this program would get 12 out of 10 stars if it had mp3 support, but its so sad that it doesn't....

Could you please let us know if you even bothered looking into adding that feature.

I too have searched high and low for a music cataloger, and thought I had finally found a great one that blowed everything away, but when I put an mp3 cd in........... damn..... back out there searching again......

Hello,

As stated in a prior reply, we are looking into this for the next major version, i.e. version 4. We do not have anything further to announce at this time regarding version 4.

Thank you for your inquiry.

Hello Matt,

Version 4 is not expected to release in 2005 nor is there any promise that MP3 cataloging will be in version 4. AVCataloger is a physical media cataloger and file level cataloging is on the request list for a future version. We will look hard at this when the version 4 development cycle begins.

Matt,

Thank you for your feedback. I'm not trying to be a politician. Development has been suspended for version 4 awaiting the new release of development software by Microsoft named Visual Studio 2005. We will be doing a complete rewrite of AVCataloger version 4 using the new Microsoft .NET technology. Until we actually write the software we cannot say what will or will not be in the new version. We are going to try and accommodate each and every request, but until we cross that bridge, we honestly don't know what's going to be in the next version.

We will certainly attempt the file level cataloging and of course evaluate it against other programs such as MusicMatch, etc. We don't want AVCataloger to turn into a music player as some have requested, or go outside the scope of the design specifications. The 'file level' cataloging has been requested a lot, therefore it does carry a lot of weight.

During our maturing as a software company, we have learned not to breath a sigh of a date as to when a version in any nature is going to be released because it causes anxiety such as this. We have also learned and confirmed that there is not one software developer on this green earth that can predict properly when a software product is going to be released. That goes from the peons to those at Microsoft and Apple, it's just something we can't do! We all have visions of 'when' we'd like our software to release but when reality hits, it NEVER happens that way.

The bottom line is AVCataloger 3.x is a solid and extremely successful product. There is no reason to dive to the drawing board and rewrite this now as there is still tremendous value in this product and it has NO bugs or outstanding issues (that we are aware of).

So please keep your suggestions coming. Because a suggestion is posted in no means it will occur, or when the next version may accommodate this. Feedback is crucial and exactly why AVCataloger has become what it has, YOUR feedback!

Thanks all for your patience and understanding! I am excited to get busy on the next version just as you are excited to use it.
